I loved it when every downtown was lively like this.

And yet downtown Tulsa now is dead. We found it very hard to find anything open at night for dinner during the conference. Even the hotel bar closed at 11pm.

There are historic views of downtown Champaign that show the sidewalks amazingly crowded. We've lost so much.

Downtown sidewalks and streets were alive with activity in even the small cities through the 1960s. Downtown Champaign was killed by converting Neil Street to a pedestrian mall in the 1970s, and imposing "tasteful" sign ordinances.

The malling-over of Main Street was a bad idea that was popular from coast to coast. I know it was supposed to compete with the big malls on the outskirts of towns, but instead it turned downtowns into creepy places where homeless people slept. Instant kill of the downtowns, and recovery of most towns still has not happened, even after tearing out the pedestrian mall and restoring the street.

Everyone loved cruising down Main Street in their cars, and the immediacy of being able to just pull into a parking spot in front to shop. Nobody wanted to park in a big garage a block away and walk the gauntlet of panhandlers and creeps to get to a store.
