Oh, the places you'll go.

This was taken shortly after an exchange with a young traveler from outside the US.

Noticing that this genius was scratching his initials into the sandstone on top angel’s landing, the exchange went something like this:

Friend: “Come on, that’s totally lame.”

Idiot: “What, are you going to report me to the park rangers? Here, here’s my photo id so you can either take it and or photograph and bring it to them.”

Me: “That’s not the point. The point is this is a National Park and you don’t do things like that here, it’s a matter of respect.”

Idiot: “Well, that’s your opinion.”

By this point, the entire crowd on top of Angel’s Landing was listening. I, being older and of course wiser, saw this an opportunity to bring someone to my side of thinking, but the junior high student in me couldn’t resist:

“Well, my opinion is that you’re a douche bag.”

He stopped.

To this day, I can’t understand why anyone would travel over the international date line, head to some exceedingly obscure spot in Utah, hike to the top of this sandstone pedestal that requires one to cling to chains and act like spiderman, only to scribble your initials into the rock…

Some other images from the way down.

Respect is the key word, for the environment, (and for the photograph obtained), this apparently not understood by the vandal. Unfortunately that's our loss as well as his. Well said btw, lol, etc.

Hooray for you!! It might have been better just to throw him on over the edge. Then we wouldn't have any more problem with that numskull. Some people just don't get it.

Excellent! Thank you for helping protect Zion and show that you care about these places. It makes Park Rangers sweel with happiness to know that we have defenders helping us on the trails and the special places our country! You are a great steward!

Nice scene.

And what a dumbskull you encountered. Thankfully, I think (!), this impulse isn't as prominent as it was in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I've seen enough from that vintage in Utah, and I keep thinking of all those sloggers on the emigrant trails carving their names into every piece of Western rock they could find.

I worked for the USFS and NPS for several years and it was amazing to me how many people would carve their name into things. Trees, stone, etc. Whenever I had this sort of reaction directed at me (while in uniform) I would just pop out my pocket knife and said "well guess I get to carve my name in your arm" that usually stopped them dead in their tracks too......then I would write them a $200 ticket.

Good for you, I wish I could catch someone defacing some of our natural wonders, I might not have been so nice. I was hiking in a wilderness area once and came upon a 4 wheeler. "in the wilderness" they were hunting.. well the statute of limitations isnt quite up yet so I better be careful what I say but needless to say, they pushed their 4 wheeler out. I wouldn't do anything to ruin it, just make it so it wouldn't start. Is that Bad? lol
