A very small koala
A Dannevirke man sought permission to bring a “very small” koala into the country on this day 20 September 1912.
While travelling in Australia he somehow adopted the 12-inch long koala and decided to bring it home to New Zealand as a pet. It was “quite harmless” he assured the Department of Internal Affairs. The department agreed and readily granted permission, but history doesn’t record any more on the koala’s life far from its natural habitat.
Shown here is the letter of application from Mr C L Neilson of Dannevirke.
