Shanghai Tower, Shanghai
With the late 2008 groundbreaking of China's tallest building, the 632-meters (2070-feet) Shanghai Tower 上海中心大厦 (pictured in center and tallest of three buildings) in Shanghai, China, construction has begun.
Designed by American architect Marshall Strabala, the supertall tower will consist of offices, a high-end hotel, retail space on six levels, more than a dozen restaurants and cafes, and a public observatory. It is scheduled for completion in 2014.
The two neighboring buildings are the (left) World Financial Center completed in August 2008, and the Jin Mao Tower (center) completed in 1999. Together, the buildings, located in Shanghai’s Pudong district, are called the “three brothers.”
By definition, supertall buildings are 300 meters (1000 ft) or taller.
Strabala led the design of the building while Director of Design at Gensler. He now leads 2DEFINE Architecture, a global architecture firm with offices in Shanghai, Seoul and Chicago.
