Below the lighthouse are the ruins of the previous lighthouses that stood here.
The lighthouse constructed by the French in 1730 at Louisbourg was the first one established in Canada, and the second on the North American continent.
This is the fourth lighthouse built at this site. It was built in 1923, a year after the third light was destroyed by fire.
