Demnig and his Stolpersteine

Demnig and his Stolpersteine

Gunter Demnig is the artist whose work I am studying for my master's thesis. Demnig installs memorials – called Stolpersteine, or "Stumbling Stones" in English – in front of the last-known business or home of victims of the Holocaust.

The Stolpersteine are small, 4-by-4 inch memorial stones that cost around €95. The project has grown from a small 1990s art installation project in Cologne to over 28,000 Stolpersteine in 616 locations in Germany and surrounding countries as of 2011. For more information, see www.stolpersteine.com.

Note: If you are German and are interested in helping me with my research, please visit: matt-cook.com/stolpersteine for a survey about the Stolpersteine Project. Vielen Dank!

Crabby

Crabby

That's the way Karen and I felt after being out in the sun too long! There were lots of little crabs along the hidden paths through the forest that we tried to use to get to the white sandy beach and back. Oh well!

(Did I mention we didn't have any non-salt water at our disposal? Yeah... I was worried about heat exhaustion.)

Playa Azul

Playa Azul

.... boy what a story to tell about this place!

Suffice it to say that in our search for a white sandy beach (which we did enjoy all to ourselves!) we got stranded with the tides and had some wicked trouble getting back to the hotel. And also got some amazing sunburn.

Drying the Coffee

Drying the Coffee

Here our tour guide is showing us the coffee drying stage of production. After this, they usually ship the beans to be roasted in their destination country, but they have one roaster on site to show tourists the process. Roasting before shipping leads to a weaker flavor, as it starts to diminish after roasting.
