7D Dolled Up For Video

Tho it's not quite done - (I still need a LitePanels MicroPro and a Marshall Monitor) this is pretty much how my Canon 7D spends its days. Yes there is a Canon 7D under all that - my video rig.

If you want real video, that you're seeing from the sites like planet 5D and in the wedding forums and so on... you need it.

You need steady and stable non-shaky video, you need good sounds, without it you're making a lot of music videos with music added on later and you need an easier way to turn the focus and zoom rings when you;'re trying to hold it steady...

I do not own any of this, but I do own a 7D, and as long as I am making home videos of my daughter with it, I am ok, but once I attempt anything with it, in its stock form, I just die a little inside...

So, if you want real video, serious video, stuff that you want to actually look at after you shoot it..

Yeah, you need like all of that :)

hope you don't get a black eye from that loupe! Looks like it's barely covering the eye, one bump and OUCH. The Zacuto has a nice rubber thing on it.

I've tried neither. Zacuto is too expensive for what it does and the Hoodman just scares me. Redrock is running late with theirs as it seems.

Thought about getting 2 lights? Gel them and use at angles? I found the litepanels quite useful for that. That and Rosco won't sell me their litepads.

    16. Scott Bourne (44 months ago | reply)

I am just using the Hoodman until I can get a ZFinder. Redrock hasn't announced plans for one and therefore isn't running late.

    17. Frank Jonen (44 months ago | reply)

Hmm right, I always thought the microFinder was the Redrock one and Hoodloupe was hoodman's.

    18. JimCutler (44 months ago | reply)

      Scott why? Just go Red.

    19. insight32 (44 months ago | reply)

ZFinder jr coming soon (2009??) - Different way to adjust diopter. Uses spacer between finder and LCD instead of dial control.

    20. Scott Bourne (44 months ago | reply)

Jim I have tested the video from the Red and on a computer monitor where most video is seen these days, you couldn't tell the diff to save your soul.

      erm - quite compact ;-)

On a serious note - isn't that pretty sub optimal when tripod mounted? I mean the long lever the cam sits essentially on?

Scott, looking at that huge mic on top, is there a way to use wireless mics? I enjoyed your Photo Focus review on the 7D.

    31. gregkeene (44 months ago | reply)

Scott, are you considering doing an article on PhotoFocus with a list of everything you used. In the photo I couldn't see if you used the DXA-5D, but I don't think I see it. I've been outfitting my 5DMkII similarly (including the DXA-5D with a quick-release), but I'm positive you have some cool tips and products that would be great to find out about.

    32. Scott Bourne (44 months ago | reply)

@Greg Full set of articles on this stuff coming as well as a new dedicated podcast hosted by myself and Alex Lindsay with input from other industry leaders.

@Just yes u can use wireless mics - just need an adapter from someplace like Beachtek.

    33. Raymond Lee Photography (44 months ago | reply)

Interesting setup Scott! I read your review on the 7D this morning, and I agree that the 7D would be VERY capable in low-light work if the number of megapixels is a bit lower. However, I will consider the camera when the price goes down a bit (or if I win your contest :P)

    34. jarring jarred (44 months ago | reply)

Any way that you can tag the photo with what all of the components are?

What lens is that? Do you switch lenses much when shooting video or are you mainly shooting with the same lens all the time with this setup?

    35. Makena G (44 months ago | reply)

      wow thats awesome!

my 5d mark2 looks something like this, only it sits on a glide track.

    38. Aleksi L. (44 months ago | reply)

Think you could shoot a low budget feature with something like that? I wonder how long it is before someone does it.

Also, I think this is great for memory, more video = faster CF card advances.

When are you going to post some video???

    42. mliebenberg (43 months ago | reply)

Very nice setup Scott. That's is some rig! If I'm not mistaken Philip Bloom uses similar setups?

Have you posted any video on Vimeo yet?

    43. Scott Bourne (43 months ago | reply)

I actually have posted a bit of video on Photofocus.com - sorry don't have time to search for it - but if interested anyone else can. I am working on two or three video projects but unlike stills - video requires much more post. I am still learning. :)

This is SIMILAR to rigs used by Phil but not the same. I am also using Zacuto rigs depending on the job. I won't be posting ANY video on Vimeo given that their Terms of Service Agreement allows them to sell videos posted on their site.

      Great rig Scott.

We used a lesser quality setup with our 7d and it managed to survive a week of roughing it in the country out of cars and cranes!
      Only just though!

Do you plan on using the monitor stand alone? We encountered the unfortunate issue of not being able to use both inbuilt LCD and external monitor at the same time.

There's got to be some way around this though, perhaps mounting an EVF somewhere and splitting/amplifying the signal to an LCD.

      Amazing set-up!

I hope to do something similar when I finally purchase a 7D. It may not be a 3K set-up like you have there, but a focus puller and barn doors are a must. I may try and construct it all myself - saving mulla for this poor college student.
