Aloysius must have really been ahead of the
times, if he put references to Cthulhu into
his cartoons in 1912.

Cthulhu is ageless and eternal. And it's
always the sensitive creative types (like
cartoonists and kittens) that are susceptible
to his madness.

The Colour Out of Space was the first I read and is a good start.

The Call of Cthulhu novella is itself a good
start. Fairly accessible, and explains a lot
of the usual Lovecraft references.
The Shadow Over Innsmouth is another good
one.

I read THe Evil Clergyman first... I was a
kid and didn't get that it was LOVECRAFT...
The strange music of Erich Zann was my first
Lovecraft (when I knew he was a famous
horror writer). Depending on your tastes, The
Vault (my 3rd), The Tomb, and my fave, The
Rats in the walls. :)

At The Mountains of Madness, novella length, has remained a favorite of
mine. The longish short story The Rats In The Walls was mentioned right above me and that is
also a favorite, same with The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Some of my favorite shorter pieces would
include The Dreams In The Witch House and The Shunned House. Call of Cthulhu is also great.
There might be some argument made that you
should read Lovecraft in chronological order,
but I don't think it's required to become
familiar with Lovecraft's Mythos, as it is
known.

Guy Davis' work on BPRD is very Lovecraftian.
I enjoy it a lot. It creeps me out.

Hellboy and BPRD, as written by Mignola, are very
Lovecraftian in general. : )

This really is extra funny because apparently
Lovecraft was fond of cats. I only recently
read "The Dreamquest of Unknown
Kadath", for instance, and cats feature
prominently. As do, of course, ghouls and
Night Gaunts, and other assorted inhabitants
of the Dreamlands.

Speaking of Mignola, if you ever get the
chance to watch The Amazing Screw-On Head, do
so.

I've seen this before! I never realized your
great-grandfather illustrated the almost
unbelievably rare Pipman's Model (Arkham Press, 1912). Most of the print run
of only 200 were destroyed after the children
who were given the book (it was originally
marketed as a collection of bedtime stories)
were institutionalized. The only extant
copies known remain in the public library of
the town of Dunwich, where, oddly enough,
they are filed with the non-fiction books...
