Pretty much everyone taking pictures of the monument does the upward shot with the medallion directly behind the soldier's head, like a halo. I thought it was important to show what the medallion actually contained, as I've seen arguments that the monument could not possibly be offensive since the sign says it's to the victims of World War II in general.

This was for the german readers in the GDR about Estonia, 1988. "Befreier der Stadt". In a booklet called: Die Sozialistischen Sowjetrepubliken - Estland.

Indeed. He's now at a military cemetary. They're going to rebuild the wall, though from the pictures I think it looks better now without it.
