Cable Car Commuters

Cable Car Commuters

Taken in November 1978.
Judging by the way the people on this cable car are dressed -- and because the guy in the white shirt is carrying his lunch -- they're probably using it to commute to work. In other words, they're San Franciscans, not tourists. I did the same thing ten years earlier (in the 60s) and on the same line (Powell-Hyde). But my ride started on Jackson Street, not here on Powell at Union Square.

Vaillancourt Fountain

Vaillancourt Fountain

Taken in November 1978.
I missed all the foofaraw when the controversial Vaillancourt Fountain opened in 1971, a year or so after I left San Francisco. Columnist Herb Caen famously said it looked like it was "deposited by a dog with a square intestine." This was my first view of it and for photographic purposes, anyway, I found it intriguing.
