Of course its a bloody different issue - The
Beijing Olympics is something that China WANTS (and needs) the world to see - ON ITS OWN
TERMS - There will be censorship around the time of
the Olympics. Do not doubt it for one minute - China will
censor everything that is not 120% positive
about China!!!!!!
well it made Explore. hope it helps to draw
some attention to the issue.
when authorities in UAE shut down Flickr, it
generated a huge flow of (some of the finest)
creativity with statements on censorship.
will it happen now in China as well? or
should we be afraid it might jeopardize our
lives in China? I guess not, but somewhere in
the back of my mind there is also caution ...
maybe I should change the scope of this
group: www.flickr.com/groups/supercensor/ I started this group out of anger over
censorship within Flickr, but the GFW would
fit within the scope as well. any ideas? would it appeal to friends of
photography in China?
there are 300 thousands internet polices in
China, i hope that China and 2008 Olympics
would be open to the world, include the
internet information and the news.

Hi Aton: you know flickr has been blocked in china.
well there is a way around it.... addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4286 p.s. you need to have firefox though.
Cool thing. I wondered about that idea some
weeks ago and thought - cool, I'll see many
pics of the Olympics on flickr just like last
year during the football cahmpionship. Then I asked myself about censorship in China
but calmed myself with the idea that they
just can censor everything. And hey, they
can! Now flickr is following the Chinese
example...
There doesn't really seem to be an issue with
showing the world the REAL China, the issue
seems to be China not showing the REAL China
to its citizens.
@ Canopus Archives the problem is most chinese citizen believes
every little thing the government say!
Do Not only blame the fake commie government
.take google for a good example .they helped
with the consorship. www.google.cn .or go to www.google.com chinese .
search Chinese toothpaste .u will find
completely different thing!
That is sooooooo amazing !.why dont they
call it Google Customer made for China?
Google is just one of them! It is not only
the chinese against the consorship..but also
.Chinese citizen needs the worlds help!

Brilliant image. It's a shame that you can never really be sure it reaches the right people at all- and even if it does, if it 'registers'.
I do remember that when the Olympic Committee came over to Beijing the first two times, the GFW was 100% inactive. Good times.
Needless to say, it was 100% reinstated within about two hours after the committee left!

Great idea Anton! And to Dutch Tom, let's hope it'll be unrestricted for A WHOLE TWO WEEKS during the games themselves ;-)...
