Coming from Mammoth Lakes, we chose the scenic June Lake Loop to drive to Mono Lake, but there wasn’t much to see because of the heavy rain. The rain had already passed through the Mono Basin however, and the light was quite beautiful. This is at the side of the road (Highway 120), looking south-west. If I’m not mistaken this is Reverse Mountain in the center, and Aeolian Buttes in front of it.
But the probably best thing on this short stop (before we continued to Mono Lake) can’t be transported by the photo: the smell! After the rain had stopped, there was an incredibly sweet fragrance in the air, flowery and herb-like at the same time. It was fantastic. The whole Mono Lake area is truly remarkable.
