Hover Fly on Thistle

A Hover Fly (Episyrphus balteatus) feeds on the nectar from a thistle flower.

Whilst I usually like to stick to Canon lenses, I have to praise this Sigma macro. To give it its full designation its the Sigma EX 150mm f2.8 APO Macro DG HSM - too much name!

It works well on the crop cameras but really seems to suit the 5D MkII. I bought Canon's 72mm adapter ring to allow me to fit their ring flash on to this lens. I am extremely pleased with the combination. When possible I like to use it stopped down to f18 for DOF, that said it works perfectly well as a general purpose 150mm, even when wide open.

IMHO Sigma have produced an excellent lens which, at half the price of Canon's long focal length macro, is an absolute bargain.
