Seventh Grade Leadership Curriculum draft

    Newer Older

It turns out that in a little under two weeks, I'll be teaching a course on leadership to 7th graders. They've already gone through an elaborate course over the last two years in teamwork and communication... and the 8th grade gets a course devoted to thinking, organization, and reaching for goals. That leaves a precarious middle ground that I'm not at all sure how to bridge. So I'm giving this basic framework to the class... today. I think I'll have to make some lists of elements that are good, though, on ... you guessed it... index cards!

There's definitely some overlap between the 8th grade curriculum and the 6th grade curriculum already. Figuring out how to bridge that gap so that kids can learn new things in this class while still move forward in the next class to a greater awareness of themselves as leaders is going to be tricky.

Any advice about moving forward in teaching this class?

Amazing aproach, that you teach this to 7th Graders! Love it! You asked how to move forward, talk about:
      - how to deal with intuition (and maybe all kind of feelings)
      - how to make better decisions (thinking it through, trust your intuition)?

(I'm no teacher, not in schools, but maybe it helps?)

I am no teacher either, but I can see that this will be both challenging and highly rewarding! This looks like a terrific school.

Did you develop this curriculum outline? Looks very good. Under Ethics I'd probably throw in humility, character vs personality, and integrity. I'd also have something on developing a visions, and management and how it differs from leadership. Though should overload them at this age!

I wish my kids are taught this!

This is a great visual. I am so impressed that you teach this to 7th graders. What school do you work at? Under Teamwork, I would add "Community" and how they build community and trust. More leaders and business owners are using social networking tools to market their services themselves. They are blogging so "Communication" is important and how they represent themselves. They are now creating their "Digital Footprint" on the Internet and it could come back and haunt them.

Do you use and integrate technology in your classroom? You can use mindmapping programs like Mindmeister or Webspiration to create this and ask your students go online to share their mindmaps.

I used to work at the Rectory School (http://www.rectoryschool.org) but now I work at the Independent Day School (http://www.independentdayschool.org) in Middlefield, CT. I'm in my first year, so this curriculum sort of got sidelined at both schools, but I like your ideas about integrating technology and developing each student's digital footprint. The community guidelines are also an excellent idea.

I did develop this curriculum outline. And it was overwhelming for kids. It turns out that meditation is also a critical skill for kids. No one knows how to sit down, breathe, and be with themselves any more. Yet all of the other skills like creativity and self-direction flow from that one skill-set.
