The changing view of Richmond Bridge from Tide Tables cafe is captured by the resident painter each day. This stone bridge was built in the 18th century and has probably been painted many times over the centuries.

I wonder if he's happy in his work/

I think that 'happy' it's a question of view point. In the case that the painter could sell his artwork for large sums than a photographer could sell a picture.

Odon, 'happiness' seems to have become another 'issue' on the media agenda over the last year or two. It comes down to; can we ever be 'happy' in a capitalist regime?; and; what is happiness anyway? :-)
As you suggest, happiness is a subjective condition.
