Galanthus nivalis - sneeuwklokje
Lange tijd heeft men de groene vlekken op de binnenste petalen
beschouwd als een honingmerk, waarmee insecten naar het nectar van het
bloemetje geleid werden.
Maar recent onderzoek heeft uitgewezen, dat in die groene vlekjes
daarnaast ook een efficiënte fotosynthese plaats vindt, waardoor de
bloem en het zich ontwikkelende zaad van suikers (lees: energie) wordt
voorzien.
The green marks on the inner tepals of the commons snowdrop have long been considered as nectar marks. But recent research has shown that apart from their main function in attracting and guiding animal pollinators, a second relevant function is proposed for the green patterned inner tepals in performing an efficient photosynthesis and providing the flower and the developing seeds with photo-assimilates.
