Take me back in time

Take me back in time by annemirtschin.
This week, I went to Melbourne to stay in the YHA in North Melbourne. I was supervising year 11 work experience students who spent two weeks experiencing the city life. As I walked to Errol Street, I noticed this corner milk bar. It took me back to my childhood days and I could not resist getting an old fashioned cup of tea and portuguese tart.

This looks like an interesting place. I've never heard of a milk bar. Can you tell more?

This looks like something I would love to have on the corner from my home, where I could walk and get anything I might need at the last minute. I bet it has a wonderful smell.

It looks like an store from the turn of the last century! A bit of everything all over the place. This is exactly what I picture the stores in Diagon Alley to be like.

So much color and light in this shot. I'd love to see the climbing up and down the ladder as customers decided they wanted something up top.
I'm with you on the Diagon Alley connection !

Isn't it interesting the different names that are used throughout the world for a shop like this? In Scotland it's called a grocer, grocery or grocer's shop. In New Zealand it's called a dairy, and because of the prevalence of the 4 Square syndicate in NZ, they're sometimes called the 4 Square shop, even if they don't belong to the syndicate.

In Australia, we call these milk bars, as you can easily walk to them and buy your bread and milk. They are just little shops on the corner of a block which are accessible to the neighbourhood and found in larger towns or cities. However, the advent of supermarkets has seen these milk bars decline markedly in number. That is why I was surprised to chance upon this one, right near the central business district of Melbourne, our capital city.
