It's a 365/SP right of passage...the shot that says "Explore This!" in order to convey how over the magic donkey we really are. This is a copycat of a copycat of a copycat. It's like lipstick on a mirror, getting naked on day two-hundred-something while saying "I'm exposing my soul to YOU!" or doing the oh-so-loved hair flip shot.
I can tell you now, I will never get naked on here...so fuhget it.
Seriously, I like it when my shots are in Explore. I love it, actually, because I know people are seeing my work. But, I'm confused by the Explore algorithm, and how so many FANTASTIC shots are excluded every day, and so much crap is seen as "interestingness." I know a lot of it's random, but still - it doesn't seem entirely fair.
"Well, Anna, life just isn't fair..."
I will never take that as an answer.

you want to know what's hilarious? two of the pictures we took together and I posted to my stream, have less than 50 views each, but they both made it into explore for a day. and I'm sticking by the fact I tagged your name in them as the reason why.
I don't believe it's magic or random, and I do believe it's a popularity contest! no matter what the dudes at flickr hq say!

You said it sister. I don't understand the black magic that is the explore algorithm. I've had days where I thought I put up something that was so awesome, and practically no one looks at it. But then I see a picture of someone's car, shot with a cell phone, on page two. Whatevs.
However, I need a few rides on the magic donkey before I do one of these. ;-P

I actually just deleted my Explore set. I finally realized that so many of my shots that made Explore were not my favs at all. So, I deleted the set and replaced it with a set of "my favs." I find this to be a much more satisfying set; and I can change it and add to it or subtract from it; and there is no algorthym involved. Just how I feel.

Explore........ Meh. I've given up trying to understand the magic donkey. When you really look at it, for a algorythm it does a decent job.... sure a few odd choices slip through each day, but I just look at them as statistical anomalies.
The people whos opinions I actually care about are my contacts, not some stupid donkeys. ;)

And then look at what's number one on the 16th, and it only gets more aggravating... I just don't see the comparison... At least it's not another shot of someone's "chucks" on a stream with 42 pictures in it... (sigh..)
Far more to the point - I love it when a copycat copycats another copycat, and each one just gets better than the one before... although I might have been tempted to hold the card up with a different finger...

If it hadn't been in Explore,for what ever reason it is,I would have missed out on a truly wonderful personality. I first saw your work here and am glad I did. I have seen a very talented artist with exquisite images. However,I agree some uh,questionable decisions about certain content have been made.

It's just an algorithm that combines all the things that can happen on a photo: comments (including who comments), views (including where the views come from), favorites, notes, groups. It's all fine and dandy (and entirely popularity-based), right up until people start groups designed to do nothing but put photos in explore. Sure, they tweak the algorithm every once in a while, but the same basic elements are involved. It'd almost be better off if it were as simple as "random photos with >5 faves" or something like that.
Your work is better than some algorithm.

I think it's stupid that the Explore ratings continue to change after the day has passed. If I look at July 23, 2009 - I want to know what was popular on that day. Doesn't make sense to me that your cool photo here can be in Explore today, but a few weeks from now can drop out. And then come back...

Damn near every photo you post is sexy as hell, so you don't have to get naked for us. Just keep doing what you're doing (including the showing a bit of leg or a knee now and then), and I'll stay happy.
I've never even heard of this donkey you all are talking about. I guess that's why I haven't made Explore...haven't rubbed the donkey's head three times or whatever.

that is really cool, and so so agree with the explore sentiments. A patent has been filed for the interestingness algorithm, so you can read it and see exactly how it works!!! I have read it. It is very interesting.
