In 1616, Dirk Hartog was the first European man to land on Australian soil. The Dutch Peter Nuyts and, above all, Abel Tasman explored most of the southern coast and called it "New Holland". In 1768, James Cook started for a long exploration voyage in the Pacific Ocean and was the first person to infer that New Holland was a continent. In the meantime, another Englishman, Matthew Flinders, circumnavigated the country to prove that New Holland was not a group of islands but a land in itself. Flinders named that land Australia.
