International Animal Rights Day 2007
|
2007 was the 10th anniversary of annual International Animal Rights Day (IARD) - initiated and co-ordinated by UK anti-vivisection & animal protection organisation Uncaged Campaigns (www.uncaged.co.uk).
There were more countries participating & more events to commemorate/celebrate this day than ever before. Events included: candelit vigils, protests, marches, information tables, exhibitions & even concerts. It was truly a global Day of Action, with many events across the UK, France, Italy, Brazil, USA, Canada & South Africa, & large events in Spain, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Russia, Nigeria, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Australia & New Zealand.
In Israel (prompted by activists) the Knesset Education and Science Committees debated vivisection of monkeys at the Weizmann Institute of Science, and supervision over animal experimentation in Israel. Knesset members from all the factions signed an Animal Rights Declaration, and several parliamentarians addressed the Knesset plenum regarding the issues at stake.
