Port of Los Angeles
Art on the Waterfront Festival 2007
Satuday, May 12, 11-5 PM
Artists Reception for FR8 7-9 PM
The Port of Los Angeles is holding its
second annual "Art on the
Waterfront" event on the L.A.
Waterfront in San Pedro on Saturday, May
12, from 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The
festival, along the Main Channel of the
nation's number one containerport, is
free and open to the public.
Produced by Angels Gate Cultural Center
and San Pedro Arts Association, Art on
the Waterfront brings together a broad
collection of artists to showcase their
talents. Activities for the day include
art and video installations in cargo
containers called "FR8", an
artisan fair, chalk art exhibitions,
skateboarding demonstrations, artist-led
children's activities and the team from
Radio Disney. Food vendors will also be
on-hand.
The festival also will mark the first
major Port event where free trees will
be given to the public as part of the
Port's efforts to support the Million
Trees Los Angeles campaign. Attendees
can take two, one-gallon trees home for
free.
Free shuttles will usher attendees from
the parking lots at 22nd Street &
Miner and 22nd Street & Sampson
Street to the event on Harbor Boulevard
and 1st Street. The Red Car can also be
utilized for visitors who want to park
in Ports O' Call Village to the south of
Harbor Blvd. Parkway or the Cruise Ship
Promenade to the North, and rides are

FR8
an exhibition of works by
24 commissioned artists
The Port of Los Angeles and Angels Gate
Cultural Center have commissioned
fourteen installation and performance
artists, nine video artists and one
documenting artist to install and
present art in shipping containers as
part of the Port of Los Angeles Art on
the Waterfront Festival 2007.
Under the supervision of Angels Gate
curator Marshall Astor, the fourteen
artists will create new works that can
be seen on the day of the festival only.
The works will be site specific, taking
advantage of the challenge provided by
the limitations of the 20-foot shipping
containers. Photographer Slobodan
Dimitrov, will document the artists as
they work. Video curator Anne Bray has
selected works from nine artists,
organized into themes relevant to the
harbor environment. The videos will show
all day in rotation in a special 40-foot
container outfitted with projection
equipment and seating.
During daytime hours (11:00 AM - 5:30
PM), the container installations and
five of the nine video artists' works
will be on view. Four different videos
artists will be represented during the
evening's Artists Reception, from 7:00 -
9:00 PM. The public is invited to the
free, catered reception, which will
feature a cash bar.
