a long way from home

a long way from home by -Angela.

I'm spending a few days in Illinois at a small photography workshop hosted by Jeff and Julia Woods. I'm headed out to a welcome reception to meet everyone, only 12 folks in the class (eight are husband and wife teams). It's three full days from 8:30am through dinner; and I'm beyond excited. I've spent the last two hours sitting in the hotel writing down everything I need covered about running my business. Wed afternoon I have a one on one hour with the Woods to discuss any remaining questions. I figure I'll cross off of my list as the class goes.

My husband brought the kids up to N VA this afternoon. It was his Mom's birthday dinner and she's thrilled to be watching her babies again. Third month in a row I've been away from my kids for 3-4 days. I'm beating myself up about it one minute and then feeling like my life is so much more balanced the next. I even let The Son get up when he heard me packing about 11 pm and stay up with me until 2am. It was so much fun being silly with him. I miss them and this is the first time I have flown alone in many, many years :)

I've been to Chicago twice in my adult life but never the surrounding areas. I spent about three hours this afternoon just driving around the vast countryside (between Bloomington and Peoria) taking pictures and just checking things out.. The sky is huge here. Since all the fields are plowed there is nothing blocking the horizon. Quite a difference change of scenery for sure.

I love Illinois farmland. I grew up in Northern IL and live in St. Louis now so I see a lot of cornfields on the drive home. Enjoy your workshop.

OMG, I'm just getting in from the meet and greet. A one hour gathering turned into four. It's going to be an amazing few days.

The added bonus is all the eye candy. They are truly one of the most attractive couples I have ever seen. I started drinking after I found out they have 4 kids and she doesn't work out. She's just super hot and we're about the same age.

The group seems really interesting (and talented), everyone except one guy has kids so balance is one of the topics we'll be covering. Their studio is beyond amazing. They are my new idol.

You wouldn't have to work out after four kids. Built-in bench pressing, ab-crunches and never-have-time-to-eat dieting. :-)

So glad you got away -- what an amazing, fun opportunity! Can't wait to hear the after-report!

bravo for you for being so dead serious about your new business. (you are talented beyond words, so it will be a smashing success i know.) the kids will be fine. when they see a mommy happy and fulfilled they have a good role model. good luck with it. enjoy the midwest (where i grew up). very nice cow btw. ;-)

Class is unbelievable. But I have a revival type of personality, I am easily fired up. Knowing that about myself for years, I have to choose carefully who I allow into my life to fire me up. The Woods are amazing. Though they don't in any way push it, they are a very spiritual family. Another area in my life that is out of balance. This is just answering so many issues for me on so many levels.

The only way to describe it is how emotionally open you are after birth. You tend to fall in love with everyone in your birth room (DR, nurse, etc) because your heart is so open. That's where I am right now.

I sobbed during the family balance session yesterday. Even though I have my husbands 200% support, financial backing, you name it 100% green light from every turn in life, I apparently haven't given myself permission to go back to work. Even though it's only 3 days a week for 5.5 each day. It's so damn hard being a Mom and trying to find that balance.

My business plan allows for two conferences or classes a year. This was THE perfect class for me. A miracle I even found out about it and just where I need to be sitting this week. I've been working through a lot of other artist's blocks in a small group of close, safe friends. I wouldn't be getting as much out of this if I weren't 7 weeks into self reflection already.

My list of questions for the one on one have changed 100 fold in the last 24 hours. There isn't a technical or sales question on the sheet. It's moved to a creative heart level. It's become a very intense experience for me. Scary to uncover even more creative blocks. This class is an exercise in creative liberation for me.

what a way to put it

that's *exactly* my personality. "guard your heart" is a good word for me.

I agree with scrapchick, Angela. My mom went back to work when I was about 4 and we still are as close as can be, as is my brother (he was 2). The time you spend will mean more and you've already found enough ways to make your time with your children special, I have no doubt that you will find this balance. Have faith. You inspire me!

I think this is so great. You are growing and learning, not only as a photographer, but as a woman, a mother and just a plain old human. Give yourself that permission. Follow your bliss. I think that is one of the greatest lessons we can teach our kids, and teaching by example is the best way for them to learn.

great shot.. and I'm so happy for you! Sounds like a wonderful place to be. I too am struggling to find my balance. I feel like I'm out of my league most of the time.. sometimes still feel like a lost little child. Like I couldn't possibly pull it all off.

I've been inspired by your ambition and fortitude. Keep rockin' it girl ;)

Congrats on the 5D, business plan and class. Hope to join you in that realm some day.
