mother and children

In the "Jesus slum", Nairobi, Kenya
The Jesus Slums is located in Athi River town in Mavoko Municipal Council. It is on the banks of the River Athi. The people staying here are casual labourers who look for labour jobs at the factories and the horticultural farms along the river. Most of these people are single mothers. They earn about Ksh. 60.00 (us$.0.86) per day. The jobs are not guaranteed. This puts a lot of strain on the families. As a result the mothers have to raise money to feed their families by involving themselves with other activities (prostitution) resulting in more children and others getting the HIV/AIDS virus and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Many of the men end up in the illicit beer halls and are permanently drunk. The youth are roaming around in town with no specific expectations. The children roam in the slum with no one to take care of them; they don’t go to school and have no health care.

Buttercup Farms Kenya has a small home for some of the children whose parents have released them or are not to be found. There are also plans to help the women to buy land (micro loans) so that they can be more self-sufficient.
