Mercia House Coventry UK (1964)

Seen with The Ramada Hotel ( built as Burlington House 1979) and the dome of West Orchard Shopping Centre (1990) and IKEA Coventry ( 2007). The red crown of LED lights on Mercia House indicate wind speed and direction - owing to this long exposure though, they are all lit.
The "Coventry light towers" project was designed in 1997 by lighting architects Speirs and Major.

Coventry is interesting by day but really comes alive at night.

i remember being told at school that the west orchards domed roof was either the highest or largest glass dome of its kind in the world when it was built. do you know if this is actually true? ive tried to find out online but no luck there im afraid. cheers :)

At the time it was built it was indeed the highest at 115 feet but that soon changed when another faceless shopping centre outdid it somewhere else. It's other claim to fame was the waterfall by the lifts being the highest such drop for an indoor water feature (about 95ft) it was so noisy they had to fit nylon rods for it to trickle down....now nobody notices it's there any more !

Perhaps, or they've just switched it off. I'll have a look next time I'm in.
