Deluxe Town Diner, Watertown, MA

Deluxe Town Diner, Watertown, MA by andyi.
I had an important errand to run in Waltham (why is it that you have to drive a half an hour to buy a decent pizzelle iron?), and on the basis that Waltham and Watertown are both north of where I live (as is Canada) and they both happen to start with the same letter, I decided to detour there for lunch and check out the Deluxe Town Diner.

It's been on my list for a little while now, plus the Deluxe is famous for its pancakes. I've been jonesing for a stack of real pancakes ever since Rich and I completed the Diner Decathalon last month, when my relationship with this breakfast staple was strictly look-but-don't-eat.

Oh, bring back the memories! I remember this beautiful blue jewel.

And Waltham: isn't there a diner named Wilson's there? An old Worcester? I, ahem, stole an ashtray there once—as you say, during younger, wilder days.

Yes, indeed! That Waltham neighborhood is a target-rich environment: a classic Worcester Lunch Car Company diner, a ten-screen art house theater, possibly the best comix & collectibles shop in New England (The Outer Limits; ask for Steve), a fantastic barbecue joint, and one or two bodegas where it's very possible to buy a Mexican Coke.

I just wish the Wilson's owners would upgrade the food. It's not bad stuff, but it's cafeteria-bland. The fact that I was headed for a store just a quarter-mile away and I decided to make a 20-minute detour to a different diner pretty much tells the tale.

The Deluxe Town Diner is now on a list of eligible venues for my regular Wednesday lunch. I just wish it weren't enmeshed in such an old region of metro Boston. It's inside a tangle of streets that sort of underscores the sense of the classic Boston navigation algorithm "Just pretend that wherever you wound up was where you intended to go."

The fact that I know what a pizzelle iron is scares me. ;-)

Oh, two really good 50s styled diners:

The Airport Diner in Manchester, NH
The Tilt'n Diner in Laconia, NH
