Pawtucket was an easy pick: two terrific diners just about a mile apart from each other. Which isn't to say it was necessarily an easy jaunt. Bear in mind that it wasn't the colonial army's unconventional tactics that befuddled and defeated all those Hessian mercenaries. The Redcoats just got hopelessly lost in a tangle of short one-way, left-turn-only streets. But we got there without any hassles, thanks to our faith in God and the GPS receiver, though frankly it was the GPS that did most of the work. All God did was make sure we didn't get hit by a falling piano along the way.

We appreciated that, don't get me wrong...but hey, credit where credit's due.

The Modern is a worthy target for roadtrippers: one of the very few remaining Sterling Streamliner diners still in operation, it was the first diner to make it on the National Register of Historic Places.
