That must be one of those new $399 iPhones.

wonderful! - now all you need is a green backlight, and to hold it up in silent protest whenever you are at any Apple event. :-)

I was thinking along the same lines the other day. The iPhone is the modern day equivalent of my trusty MP 2100.

When the iphone can do everything my MP130 was able to do, I'll be tempted.

@Mrklaw, remember what a Newton cost all those years ago? Ten years ago, without inflation my MP 2100 was much more expensive than my iPhone. I sold it on eBay for more than I paid for my iPhone today! The iPhone can do a lot more than the Newton already and it easily fits in my shirt pocket. Did your Newton make wireless calls? I loved my Newton but the iPhone is a much more evolved device.

A thing of convoluted beauty. Definitely one for the Newton pool.

Now I might need to make a complete set of newton-style icons for my iPhone.

Except that Newton sucked and never worked right. Other than barely similar form factor, you're seriously pushing the similarities between the two.

@ Nickb:
Well, there's also the fact that they're from the same manufacturer.

Also, get ready to run. :D

The fitting into the shirt pocket advantage... that's for damn sure!   : )

The MessagePad 2000 worked great...so well, in fact, that it spoiled me for any other PDA and even now, I carry a pocket notepad with me when I'm covering news events.

If the iPhone had a built-in outliner, it'd immediately aquire a lot of the nigh-infinite ginchiness of the MessagePad.

(3000+ views in less than a day?!? Did this photo get BoingBoinged or something?)

(Edit: Google-fu reveals a mention on Daring Fireball. Cool!)

Apparently I'm one of the first people filtering in from Gruber (I love your writing as well, Andy). In the heat of the price cut anger -- before the Apple Store credit was announced -- I also came up with another name for my iPhone. It now shows up in iTunes as "Daren's IIvx". I haven't changed it back yet, but I probably should.

Jer Wood - Your graphic is becoming my iPhone wallpaper within the next 30 minutes.

Sounds like it's time to write an outliner for the iPhone!

Love my MP130, MP2k, eMate.

Love love the iPhone but it can't print, share files, oh! store files (well ok photos), and can't cut/paste!

iPhone is the better device overall for me. Great photo.

I don't think the Newton is better than the iPhone, but CNet thinks it's better than the Samsung Q1. See:

I think if we're using Apple II nomenclature, a downgrade of the Newton ][ would be the Newton ///. :)

Re: phalougher

IIvx -- Still feeling burned about that, eh? :)

My university journalism department bought a lab full of them in the short window they were available. I remember coming in the next fall and almost laughing. Almost.

The folks that say, "The Newton never worked," never owned one. I had both a 110 and a 130 and they were indispensible. I never had any problem with the handwriting once the OS was upgraded to 2 and carried mine with me everywhere. Yes, I frequently took notes on it. Yes, I could get email with it (even after eWorld no longer existed).

Threepio, my 130, is sorely missed.

Sweet Jesus hanging from a tree. That's the most beautiful thing I've seen in weeks.

And thank you for giving me words to explain the deep yearning inside of me for an iPhone: it's a successor to my MP2000! Perhaps not a fully realized successor, what with the lack of outliner, but someday we'll have the appropriate 3rd party software packages that made the Newton so dang useful...

I wonder if the iPhone has 'Colorsync' buried somewhere underneath it's lightened OS? That would be easy to get the green monochrome screen. I've not played with one, can you look through the directories the same way as one can with OS X?
