Tree House
Crazy house in Cincinnati, OH, close to Hyde Park. I want to meet, or
at least see the person that decided to make their house look like
this. This is my most interesting and most favourited photo!
Maison bizarre à Cincinnati, OH, près de Hyde Park. J'aimerais
bien rencontrer, ou même juste voir la personne qui a fait construire
une maison pareille. Ceci est ma photo la plus intéressante! Back to USA - Visit the World

The architect is a professor at the University of Cincinnati if I'm not mistaken. He's part of a group that focuses on "organic architecture". At least I think that's the term.
AnDy631 (82 months ago | reply)
Oh cool, thanks for the info man! I was wondering what the deal was with this place. It certainly looks "organic," anyway. I really want to see what it's like inside.
solodad300 (82 months ago | reply)
Small.
AnDy631 (82 months ago | reply)
Yeah, I bet it would be.

I have seen this several times but have never had my camera with me. I would love to get some shots of this. Will just have to make myself get over there!!! House is so cool!

I was told that his U of Cincinnati students over the years have done most of the construction & design as part of their grade. Apparently it is a continual project. I was so intruiged when I was there, that I knocked on the door. I'm usually not that bold, but if your house looks like a bee hive art fun house and has an orange swirly set of stairs leading to the door...I need to know more!
AnDy631 (78 months ago | reply)
@mikesma: Yeah I made a special trip to photograph this house, it just had to be done...
@bbnttm: That's very interesting, thanks for the info...there's a good way to keep your construction costs down, huh? :) Did anyone answer when you knocked on the door?

Thanks for adding this to First to Ten (1-2-10)

No problem...I'd been waiting for it to get to ten faves for awhile now...
AnDy631 (78 months ago | reply)
I can't think of the street names, but I could tell you how to get there from Rookwood or Hyde Park Square...
solodad300 (78 months ago | reply)
Agility,
I'm thinking you're asking for a potential roadtrip.
It's on the corner of Erie Avenue and Tarpis in the neighborhood of Hyde Park in Cincinnati. A major intersection nearby you could use for a map search is Marburg Ave and Erie Ave.
AnDy631 (78 months ago | reply)
Yeah, it would be a bit of a drive from Brooklyn...
AnDy631 (78 months ago | reply)
Cool...have fun on your roadtrip!

I finally made it over there to get some shots of the house... you can see it here. It was fun! I have one that is almost identical to your photo... we must have stood on the same spot across the street!
AnDy631 (77 months ago | reply)
Nice! Great minds think alike! :)

I would like to see and get a copy of the blueprints that were submitted to the building department before construction of this.
AnDy631 (77 months ago | reply)
Hehe yeah seriously, I wonder how this thing ever got approved...
Modern Pixie (76 months ago | reply)
wow, this is really late. 2 months late. but in response to the question "did anyone answer when I knocked on the door"..Nope. My friend and I knocked on every door, and tried to see in but you can't really SEE in for some reason. There aren't very many windows at eye level. The detail in real life is incredible though. The mosaic. If anyone else heads there for sight seeing, right across the street is a wonderful mom & pop coffee shop.
AnDy631 (76 months ago | reply)
That's too bad, I was hoping you got to talk to the guy...I'm sure you're not the first person to have knocked on his door to ask questions about his house.

This is really something different!:)
AnDy631 (75 months ago | reply)
Yeah, you're not kidding!
~Jana~ (Mikesma Photos) [deleted] (75 months ago | reply)
Talked to a guy at work last night and he said they call it the "mushroom house"
:)
AnDy631 (75 months ago | reply)
Hehe I can see why...personally I think it looks like a tree house, the kind of place Ewoks might live :)
pumpkinoodle (75 months ago | reply)
Wow - that's awesome!!
AnDy631 (75 months ago | reply)
Yeah, isn't it great?

Oh, one man's dream, and he had the courage to show us all what was in his head. Cool place, and shot.
AnDy631 (74 months ago | reply)
Glad you like it...yeah you gotta love anyone who comes up with this house!

Just happened to see this photo. Terry Brown is the owner/designer and has actually put the house up for sale. It will be interesting to see what the next owner is planning on doing with the property.
solodad300 (71 months ago | reply)
Here's another of the building with a link to the article about the sale.

It's one of those houses you either love or hate. I'd love to check it out in person. I've blogged this at mosaik.wordpress.com.
AnDy631 (67 months ago | reply)
Yeah I love it just because it's so weird personally. Thanks for the link, I'll check out your blog in a bit!

This is fantastic. I love organic architecture.
AnDy631 (67 months ago | reply)
Glad you like it! It is definitely the kind of house that makes you do a double-take as you drive by!

This place was up for sale in 2006 -- any idea what happened with that?

AnDy631 (65 months ago | reply)
Yeah, I read that it was up for sale but I haven't heard anything about it since then. I can't imagine it would be easy to sell this kind of house though, I mean usually people who have crazy off-the-wall taste want to build their own place. Maybe there's some Ewok out there that will buy it though... ;-)
hldavis724 (62 months ago | reply)
It is still up for sale for 1.2 million something along that line. One of the doc's that I work with told me about it.
AnDy631 (62 months ago | reply)
1.2 mill huh? That seems high but I guess it is a unique place. I bet it'll be up for awhile at that price though.
~Jana~ (Mikesma Photos) [deleted] (62 months ago | reply)
The asking price was around $400,000, so if they couldn't sell it for that, I can't imagine the price went up!
Hi Andy - how are things going over yonder?
AnDy631 (62 months ago | reply)
400 K...that sounds more reasonable to me! Things are going well over here Jana, thanks! How have you been?
~Jana~ (Mikesma Photos) [deleted] (62 months ago | reply)
Getting a few health issues under control. Other than that, still out every chance I get w/camera in tow! :D

This house was on the market for awhile recently. But I think the owner got cold feet. Gotta believe THAT house is a labor of love.

See what you like and find something unique. It's tough, but it's what makes a GREAT photograph. I think you found it here and surely deserves my appreciation and favourite. Well done!

Terry Brown and my father were bestfriends. They were both architects, and Terry was the reason we moved to cincinnati. My father and brother helped to build this house. Terry passed away on Saturday, near his home in Texas, in an unfortunate accident. But I'm so glad this house exists, as a monument to him.
AnDy631 (48 months ago | reply)
Thank you for sharing that with me. I'm very sorry to hear about your family friend's passing. This unique and provocative building is surely more of a mark than most of us will leave when we go. My condolences to you, your family and your friends.

I used to work across the street from there. Construction was truly organic. I remember watching it grow little by little.
Check the Google Street view for Erie Ave and Tarpis Ave, and you can see the house!
