Cute! I was fooled too, couldn't work out what it was - looks like most of the animal lovers gave it a miss too

This is excellent. It makes you really feel the predator side of the panther.

How did you took this picture?
I am searching for a guide to 'How to take pictures in a Zoo' and I would to appreciate some valuable help from yours.
Excellent photo!

1. Learn how to use manual focus - you need to be able to focus on the eye of the animal. It helps to see past the fences and grasses that catch the auto-focus's attention.

2. Take photos on overcast days instead of bright sunlight. The contrast range is too much otherwise in zoo enclosures.

3. Keep the aperture large and the depth of field small (and use focus control) to blur both the foreground and the background which often contain elements you don't want - particularly in zoos.

4. Watch the animal for a long time and figure out where they walk and hangout, feeding times etc. Look for vantage points that don't contain man made elements or other people. Wait, wait ... wait - lots of patience required. Set up the camera for that position instead of following the animal around all the time.

5. Pay attention to reflections in any glass, wear dark clothing and wait for no other zoo guests to be causing reflections. Get as close to the glass as you can - I've even made up a sheet of black cardboard I can poke the lens through to get rid of reflections. Carry a wet cloth with window cleaner to get rid of grubby hand prints if you are shooting low.

6. Use a tripod or monopod so that you can keep the camera still when the light is low.

Hope that helps.

Hi, Andrew! Thanks for sharing this with the creative commons license. I've linked to your photo from a short story ( dukejeffrie.wordpress.com/2007/10/16/bolero/, in portuguese).

Even though I'm talking about the Amazon forest, your photo brings the exact balance between dare and scare that makes me feel like easy dinner. Very nice work!
