Aluminium ShardsThose grey shards of metal are from where I had to break one of the larger parts. This was done by putting the part into the top of the furnace and heating it until it became brittle and hitting it with a hammer. The risk was that the part would melt over everything. Uploaded on May 21, 2009 The Pipe Crucible
The crucible made from steel pipe with a welded base. Notice the blast sheild on the right side bottom. The furnace flame hits this. The handles fit into the slots at the top for lifting and pouring. Uploaded on May 21, 2009 Puddles of Al metal
The 2nd three bars ... if you can call them that ... puddles maybe. Uploaded on May 21, 2009 Bars and DrossThese are the first nicely formed bars. Each one is around a pound of metal (10.5 cubic inches). Uploaded on May 21, 2009 The barsI ended up melting all the parts I had and pouring them into bars I had pressed into a green sand drag. I poured 3 bars, waited for them to cool and picked them out with tongs. This broke the nice bar molds and the last three bars were oddly shaped. Uploaded on May 21, 2009 |
