that is a spectacular image. so unfortunate about the fires though.
mtnlion44 (68 months ago | reply)
Not really. This is simply Gaia's revenge;a necessary rebalancing. As fossil fuels deplete these state-scale firefighting projects will become prohibitive and many of these areas will simply have to be written off. They never should have been built in in the first place. Back to scrub.

im so sorry for those people. :(

mtlion44, you're a cold hearted idiot!

It is unfortunate. But Los Angeles has been sucking all the water out of that region for decades. Look up Owens Lakebed. It used to be a beautiful lush area with a river and greenery. Now it is a completely dry desert. Thanks to LA. I also think those places shouldn't have been built. At least not to the scale that they are. I do feel very sorry for those who are losing everything though...It's so sad.
Brian 1965 (68 months ago | reply)
Very unfortunate for the people who live in the fires path, but this is a re balancing of nature and economics, just think that all of these people will need new homes and the land will be rebuilt, bringing relief to the California housing market.
jben2007 (68 months ago | reply)
Wow, thank God 'mtnlion44' and 'johnlm04' aren't firefighters or we'd all be dead here in Southern California!

This just proves native americans right. We are stewards of the land, not owners. Should've sold those houses at the peak. Hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, asteroids AND stock market crashes remind us we are but stick players on a stage of apocalypse.
jerjonjoe3 (68 months ago | reply)
You people who think this is a rebalancing and Gaia's revenge are pathetic. My family is one of those families you say is a rebalancing act. You need to get a life and start thinking of someone else but yourselves. This is a really sad situation regardless if it is my family or not.
Ane to the one who said bringing relief to housing market what about all the stuff they lost, think if it was you.

Dear mtnlion44, Brian 1965, Foto21,
You guys are right! Yes, they lost homes, they lost everything, but that's life. Everything comes and goes and it's their time now. It does not take a genius to figure out living close to dry bushy area is prone to fire, especially it's not the first time. It's like living next to a volcano, what do you expect? If I lost my house in those areas, I will blame myself for being stupid after learning several previous canyon fire. Brian 1965 is a smart man, I think they might help out the market, but more importantly we can buy up those burn down land on the hill and do a rebuild. Years later people will forget about today, and buy and build expensive homes again and history reply itself.
morning_starr2000 (68 months ago | reply)
wow what is up with you people?? how would you feel if you lost everything in a fire or any other disaster, would you still say its ok its just a "re-balanceing" ??? it is people like you that are part of the problem.
and now from EA Poe
I looked upon the scene before me - upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain - upon the bleak walls - upon the vacant eye-like windows - upon a few rank sedges - and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees - with an utter depression of soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the after-dream of the reveller upon opium - the bitter lapse into everyday life - the hideous dropping off of the veil.

I have family there. I haven't been in touch with them yet. This is truly a tragic event. No one should ever have to go through.
To vent a little:
Gaia worshipers are just as pathetic as the rest of the religions. It's finding a reason for something that has no reason. Fires start because of negligence or natural causes not a revengeful Deity who gets it's jollies out of taking a magnifying glass to San Diego.
Sorry if it offends.

Re-Balance:
I hope you die, seriously. I honestly and truly hope to God that your house burns to the ground someday, and then you will be able to relate to the hundreds of thousands of people, including myself, who have gone through this horrendous experience.
You say: "but that's life"
I say: F**K YOU.
How dare you say that we are "stupid for living here"; we live here because it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. You are probably just jealous that you can't afford to live in a multi-million dollar house like all of us here in SD.
mkptbruno (68 months ago | reply)
pray? sorry but that is going to do nothing. god doesn't intervene , we have are own free will and so does nature. i drove thru that area east of malibu and the hills are completely bare, for a reason being burned out ten gazillion times before. if u build there you're just stupid and they should n't allow it in the first place.
dustymoon2007 (68 months ago | reply)
I have been in those peoples shoes. We lost our three bedroom ranch home. We lost everything. 90% of the people are not rich in California. There is never enough insurance to cover loses. The insurance can not replace pictures or family heirlooms that has been handed down through the generations. My heart and prayers go out to those that are in a bad situation. The memories of this fire will go on for as long as you live. Everytime you smell smoke or see fog you will think back on the fire that destroyed everything you had.

well, I took johnlm4's advice and look'd up Owens Lake. I live in LA co. "While most local residents place the blame on LADWP's aqueduct and groundwater pumping programs, the situation is not that simple. " Thru-out the W. U.S., a process of ecological succession occurs, & the Owens Valley is no different. For similar sit.
see the Indiana Dunes @Lake Mich. Owens lake is 1/3 the depth it was in the ice age.
One friend was evac'd & two others are trapp'd @ jobs; fwy's are closed. No rain=drought; fires=no H2O to drink;
That's hard to imagine in cool midwest temps, but it's fearful and deadly to die from drought caused fire conditions. This is not a case of "better you than me". How about water, food, and clothes and better...powerful prayers to lift exhausted spirits in 12 fire locations from Ventura to the Mexican border? 250,000in San Diego Co. alone evac'd; horses lost...Our smudgy faces are looking for love from our
fellow U.S. citizens...let the rest of the world beat us up, but you guys are above that.

To Mntlion44: I just love psuedo spiritualists such as yourself with your snide sense of superiority and complete lack of empathy for other human beings. I'm sure that you, being so spiritual and removed have never used a fossil fuel in your life—driven or ridden in a car, or a bus, a plane, etc. And unless you live in a scrub bush yourself... ALL homes, including the one you live in now, used to be wilderness. Get over yourself before your hot air adds to the flames and they have to call in firefighters from neighboring states.
lee.eunsuk [deleted] (68 months ago | reply)
no matter what the situation, losing something, anything, to fire is unfortunate. it's sad. who gives a damn about the rebalacing crap you're talking about. whats more important, the economy or human life? granted, mankind is sucking the earth's resources up, but is it anyone's fault that your ancestors started doing so first?
and maybe god doesn't intervene all the time, but he' not a pitiless deity with the attitude some of YOU have. he may decide to help his creations live, you damn assholes.
for the ones who think the injured and dead people deserved to have their homes and belngings burned down...
wait til you're burning in hell for that.
how do you like the rebalancing act now

SD Girl:
Let's separate this into two things:
1. Empathy for the people impacted and 2. Lessons learned
As for 1. Yes, I feel sorry for the people impacted, they should get all the help they need.
As for 2. No, just because it is a beautiful place, does not mean you can built there. If you decide to built in the same spot where you know the same event is going to happen in a foreseeable time frame then you have to accept the consequence. People that built homes in a canyon or on a hill side with vegetation that is prone to fire should be required to sign a waiver that nobody will come and get them when it burns. No fire insurance s/b made available. Ditto with folks that decide to live in flood plains. Or folks that need to built their home on a steep hillside facing the ocean (the ocean will eventually swallow the place). Here in WA State we have folks complaining that cougars attack their pets after they moved right into cougar territory. How insane is that? Why should the rest of the population pay for the consequences of your choice of living in the form of higher premiums/taxes etc. Why do you have the right to ask fire fighter/police/medical personnel to risk their lives for your decision to move into an area that will burn to pieces every time the Santa Ana comes in?

I thikn the main thing us as citizens of this country should be worried about is the well being of the inhabitants. Someone lost his or her life today and thousands are being displaced from their homes. THis is a sad state of affairs and maybe if we as a nation should try to be more compassionate to those in need right now. The firefighters are being brave and everyone should be praying for them instead of trying to condemn others for their opinion and beliefs. Fire flood hurricane and tornado all take things from people that can't be replaced, baby clothes memories such as pictures and paintings. Insurance and FEMA can help to rebuild but what can help to rebuild their shattered hearts at losing what matters to the inhabitants? OUR prayers.
ShaneinVegas (68 months ago | reply)
Great picture. Life is lost every day. in 100 years 6 billion people will have died. Why am I supposed to feel sorry for someone losing a house full of "stuff"? They have insurance don't they?
But the main reason I don't feel sorry, is that S.Californian's drive SUV's and gulp more gas and electric than any other state in the country. So get used to the dry weather and fires, because Global warming is here and these people are the cause of it.

Seriously, everyone needs to get off their high horse. Honestly, if Gaia TRUELY wanted revenge against us humans...She could easily wipe EVERYthing without even giving us a heads up or a sign of change. So you can keep talking on and on trying to sound intelligent about thinking you know what Gaia wants to do or is thinking, same thing with God. If he wanted to wipe out or destroy, he'll send whatever he wishes without warning.
So you keep on bitching about Gaia and God ruining the earth. When your house comes burning down, you'll be begging for forgiveness and pissing yourself for even insulting a power that is far more superior to you and all of us.
So stop acting like a bunch of ignorant morons and do what you can to help. If you can't do anything, don't sit and bitch at us.

The thought it self that you Just MIGHT BE IN THAT SITUATION ,JUST REALLY WOULDNT MAKE IT CREEPY? MAke u scared out of your wits??? My god!
For the person who said "this people doesnt need prayers, watch it, God is watching and hearing you" guess you DONT BELIEVE IN GOD.
FOR ALL PEOPLE WHO BELIEVES, HAVE FAITH ,LETS PRAY, DONT LET DEMONS GET TO YOU, GOD HAS THE POWER, IF THIS IS HAPPENING , ITS FOR A REASON.....
YOU GUYS HAVE TO UNITE, DONT AGGRAVATE THE SITUATION AS IT IS ALL AMERICANS, WE ALL NEED ONE ANOTHER IN TIMES LIKE THIS! No order of status in life, races, intelligence! Pleaseeeeeee!
OUR GOD ALMIGHTY IS NOT SLEEPING. HAVE A PRAYER RALLY. SPREAD THE WORD... WE SHALL ALLPRAY FOR YOU BACK HERE IN MANILA, PHILIPPINES!

To ShaneinVegas: Dry weather and fires have been a condition in California long before Global Warming. And arsonists just love the Santa Ana winds to do their sickening fire starting thing. Anyone, including yourself, who drives any car, not just an SUV, or rides a bus or has taken an airplane, is contributing to global warming. We're all in this together, like it or not. Pointing fingers at people who've lost their homes to fire and say it's their own fault because they alone are responsible for global warming is moronic.

Look... I live in SD county.. my aunt and her fam live in Fallbrook and have been evacuated. Please stop the stupid comments about "Gaia" and "re-balancing" I get where you are coming from. It's unfortunate that California is overpopulated, and is being overdeveloped. But to me, a person's life is a bit more important than mumbling about some type of divine retribution. We need to come together, and help our neighbors, not kick them when they are down. Keep SD and it's people in your thoughts. We need them.
Organic Stills (68 months ago | reply)
Some of these comments here have made me feel sick. There are people who are still displaced in New Orleans - did they deserve it too? If you have a stupid comment about why these people deserve to lose their homes/global warming/divine retribution, I can only suggest that you keep your ignorant statements to yourself.
I have a friend who has been out there fighting the fires since 5am yesterday morning. He's risking his life while you are talking nonsense. Perhaps if you are in a situation where your possessions, valuables, memories, things that made your life what it is, are at risk of being destroyed you will re-evaluate.

sandy_ashes: I am 100% with you on this one.
lee.eunsuk [deleted] (68 months ago | reply)
that's right. God isn't asleep.
"ask, and you shall receive...."
pray for those who have been evacuated, and for the firefighters, maybe you'll make a difference.
all the rebalance theory people can just wait to burn in hellfire. how do you like that rebalancing now
thelazybee (68 months ago | reply)
Lee, apparently you know something must people don't. If God is not sleeping what exactly is He doing at this moment? Trying to blow the fire out?? Wouldn't rain be more helpful?
Fun Monitor (68 months ago | reply)
I don't think it's as shocking to those of us who have been born and raised here. We've seen this happen time after time after time.
Everyone knows someone who is fighting the fire and/or someone who has been evacuated.
There's not much else to do right now except evacuate and let the firefighters try to hold the line until the wind dies down in a day or two.
It sucks, but it's nature.

Re-balance (68 months ago | reply)
Organic Stills: No, those people in New Orleans do no deserve it at all because they never had any prior warning or history of such a storm. I am not saying those in Malibu or in SD deserve it neither, but they should have known. Just like how I am living in California and if I lose everything I have because of earthquake, then it's meant to be because I already know one day it will strike.
lee.eunsuk [deleted] (68 months ago | reply)
i was referring to a previous comment by someone else.
yes rain would be helpful. but do we know what He's thinking or doing? No. the least we can do is pray, for rain even.
Organic Stills (68 months ago | reply)
The only point I was trying to make was that instead of making ridiculous comments, some sympathy and wishes for safety of those being evacuated/losing their houses would be nice. Perhaps even some consideration for the firefighters who are out there risking their lives.
Under no circumstances should losing everything you own be an "oh well, it happens" or an "I told you so" situation. Insurance can't replace the things that matter most.
lee.eunsuk [deleted] (68 months ago | reply)
WHO CARES IF YOU KNOW NATURAL DISASTER CAN HAPPEN, DAMN IT, ITS STILL SAD AND YOU'RE JUST AN ARROGANT AND EGOTISTICAL LITTLE ASS, RE-BALANCE. NEW ORLEANS DIDN'T DESERVE IT. CALIFORNIA DOENS'T DESERVE IT.
BUT YOU! YOU DESERVE TO GO TO HELL.
THERE ARE FIREFIGHTERS COMING IN FROM OTHER STATES TO HELP PUT THE FIRES OUT AND ALL YOU CAN SAY IS "its a rebalancing act" ?!
I'VE GOT FRIENDS WHO'VE BEEN EVACUATED, LEAVING WHEN FIRE SUDDENLY POPPED UP IN FRONT OF THEIR HOUSES!
YOU ARE FULL OF SHIT, DAMN YOU AND GO BURN IN HELL
thelazybee (68 months ago | reply)
Lee, I can see that praying may be a useful attempt if typically this time of the year rain is due and none is coming. The problem is, it is not. Every year, the Santa Ana winds are back, the scenes are replayed all over. Don't you think your energy would be better used to plan better, to reduce sprawl, and to stop expanding into fire prone areas? Then you won't have to rely on a higher power but you can take fate in your own hands.
