Drobo feeding

Added another 2TB Western Digital drive. Got 7TB of HD's in there now but due to protection about 4.47TB's are available.

DroboPro Smart Volumes

The beauty of DroboPro or DroboElite is in their ability to support multiple virtual Smart Volumes. The DroboPro supports up to 16 X 16TB and the DroboElite supports up to 255 X 16TB. The Drobo only supports one Smart Volume of 16TB. This means as physical drive sizes become larger you can support way more than 16TB of data on the DroboElite and DroboPro. Think of the volumes as partitions except these aren't tied to one physical disc as with regular partitions. The Smart Volumes show up on you desktop as individual drives due to the ability of iSCSI to support LUNs.

With this virtualization my DroboPro can support up to 256TB while current physical drive technology can only go to 8 drives of 2TB capacity each (16TB) in the DroboPro. This virtualization is not found in regular RAID arrays. You can create volumes on regular RAIDs but they aren't smart... they can't give physical storage capacity to the rest of the pool when you delete something. They also can't grow beyond their current physical limit. Think of these as static volumes with no growth potential.
