It's Too Blasted Hot Out Here
So Mrs. Andertho and I went out today to engage in one of our favorite activities, feeding nuts to squirrels.
We went to Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House, which is home to some of the most jaded, city street squirrels we know. They practically walk up to you and demand a nut.
It was really hot today in DC, and we noticed a behavior in many of these squirrels we’ve never seen before. Once they would get a nut, they would lay down with all four limbs spread-eagled against the ground, hugging the cool soil with their bodies. Then they would eat their nut.
It was a fascinating adaptation to observe -- squirrel air-conditioning.

I actually laughed out loud when I saw this - great shot! Our dogs when I was growing up in Texas would do something quite similar. Of course they would also lie on top of the yard sprinklers and create small ponds if they got the chance :-).

I saw a squirrel do this over near the National Gallery. He was sprawled out on a bench though. Didn't even flinch when I got close.

This young punk was watching me for quite while as I was taking nuts out of my colorful embroidered bag Mrs. Champ got for me in Guatemala and feeding them to one rodent after another. I saw him check his pack and then his pockets, but he didn't seem to have found what he was looking for.
A minute later he comes over. He sits next to me on the bench. He says to me. He says: "Nice bag. Can I grab a couple of nuts?
I says: "Pardon?"
He says: "I like your bag . Can I grab a couple of nuts?"
Well I loose it. I snap. I headfake him, I come around with a roundhouse, upper cut to the jaw and a flurry of jabs to the solar plexus. He goes down. He's lying down n the brick walkway, squirming.
I says:"Well how's that? Is that 'I like your bag, can I grab a couple of nuts enough for you' pal?"
Ever since I've been the Champ.

Love this - so glad that I'm not the only one that's seen the stealth squirrels of Lafayette Park! I previously had only seen the gray squirrels doing this, sometimes on the grass, but this afternoon I stalked a black squirrel doing the stealth move. Unfortunately, I only had my camera phone with me, so my image is pretty crummy...
