Thanks DCist, for making this "Photo of the Day".
You guys are a great, informative site, and the exposure you give local photographers is fantastic.

I noted that a commenter on the DCist site offered a critique of this photo, essentially saying that the colors are not natural and labeling my use of Photoshop as "cheating".

This is a fascinating argument, one I have heard before (HDRs seem to gin up the most controversy).
The colors are not natural by design. I did not want them to look natural, I wanted them to look like this. The natural colors in this case did not equal how I experienced this moment. This rendition did. I don't think that's "cheating", I think that's creating something how one wants to create it.

Nice photo, congrats on DCist PoD! I had to disagree with the first DCist commenter too. To me post processing a photo on the computer is the same as going into a dark room. Does that mean a dark room is cheating too?

Beautiful shot!
(And thanks for leaving the EXIF info intact. So many Flickr users are deleting the stuff, which makes me wonder if they actually took the photo.)

by far the coolest shot I've seen in a long time!
(you are not a photojournalist for a news publication, so this is not cheating)

OK, so now the issue with the guy on the DCist comments page is that using Photoshop isn't so much "cheating" as it is that it takes no "skill" and can be done in "5 minutes".
I hate to come across the wrong way here (i.e., a hypersensitive punk), but I do love Photoshop and I think using it effectively involves more than just amping the saturation and dropping a couple of filters.
Here's the original of that shot:
You could probably make a case that says I lacked skill for not getting the shot better in the first place, but I was driving and had a split second to get those guys in that pose before they were gone.
I really liked the idea, and I wanted to make something out of it. That took about 70 minutes in PS to accomplish.

This is way cool. Yay for POTD!
DCist commenters are harsh.
And new camera?
andertho (61 months ago | reply)
Hey Dottie.
Yup, you spotted it. I dropped the D50 getting out of my car and smashed the case.
I was absolutely heartbroken.
We're going to Alaska in a couple of weeks and I absolutely *have* to have a camera for that.
So... I'm the proud owner of a D80!
(The D50 is getting repaired by Nikon, so if all goes well I'll have a back-up and my beloved first DSLR will be whole again.)
I went in to the store thinking I would buy the new 10mp D40, as I really loved yours when I saw it at The Warehouse (so compact), but it turns out that some of my old-style lenses that rely on the body to focus won't work on the D40, so I went the D80 route.
It's a pretty big step-up. I love the D50, but the D80 is simply more versatile and takes better shots. Plus with 10mp I can crop to my heart's content and not lose clarity.

The before and after comparisons are excellent! You took an on-the-fly picture and turned it into a work of art. There's artistic creators as well as purists, so very nice.

Great great great shot. Question: you mention HDR in your early comment, is this an HDR shot? Since you only link one original and you're dealing with moving subjects, did you do the psuedo-hdr trick in photoshop to get this? I do that some and it provides fun results.
As for the commenter on the DCist... his words aren't even worth a response. Nice work man!

I think that this is a great shot and a great title. Way more interesting IMHO with the treatment that you gave this shot.

This is not "cheating" at all, but the reflection of quite a bit of talent to transform that photo into the image you posted. I'm really impressed - especially after reading all the debate on dcist.
