Mysterious Visitation

May 10th, 2008 - New York, United States

The word "mysterious" seen in this photograph is taken from the phrase "mysterious visitation of God's providence" (one of the less satisfactory explanations offered over the years for the terrible Irish famine, which killed one and a half million people between 1845 and 1852), which forms part of the two miles of text - including quotations, statistics and historical details concerning not only the Irish famine, but world hunger in general - that cover the walls of Brian Tolle's Irish Hunger Memorial in Battery Park City.

This photo was blogged on May 27th, 2009 on CBC Radio's Words At Large page, described as "an online destination for Canadians who love books", to illustrate a podcast of Howard Engel's mystery novel Memory Book.

Great work on this...I spend time at the memorial regularly, whenever we go down to the WFC and walk the Battery Park City esplanade. Never got a shot like this, though.

This is what I was too tired to try to write this other night. you need to create a memorable term that means photographer who specialises is candid portraits of strangers engaged in observing or interacting with publicly displayed art. That's just too much of a mouthful, but It really does seem to be your forte.

Came to see who it is who likes my comments on Emmanuel Smague's pics :) Glad I did, lots I like here too.

Not sure whether the mystery is blinding or the visitation so great it is going to swallow this character alive or take it away on its spaceship. In either case, it feels to me like a brainwashing attempt (the lines around the sign look like radiations from this bright light) and I want to resist this less than satisfactory explanation, as you so well put it. A powerful shot.

So striking. That wall could have said absolutely nothing and this would still be a most gorgeous composition!
