In Spirit of Fashion Week

This is still from the same series of fashion tests I did last weekend. I'm trying all different kinds of lighting to see what works and what doesn't. Here, I used my trusty Canon 70-200 mm lens, but next time, I would like to see results from more compression. What if I shot it with my Canon 24-70 mm? I had to sit on the other side of the studio for full-length shots. LOL

Straight out of the camera, I didn't love this picture. I wanted to shoot this at F22 to get the background darker, but then I lost sharpness. Therefore, I cheated and burned the image a bit. Is it too dark? It looks better on my website against a black setting:

Lighting: (Why do I never write this down or take pictures of my setup?!) I think I placed a medium softbox over head on a boom for that illuminated floor. The seamless paper is Slate Gray. The softbox may have had a grid. And for the main light, I think I just lowered the strip light from the previous shot.

Okay, I'm done talking to myself now. Have a great day, everybody!

With the 24-70 you get a distorted effect that can exaggerate the size of objects in the photo, like feet or heads. The 70-200 works nicely for these but yes you do need some room to work. I haven't noticed any loss of sharpness with my 70-200 at small apertures but there could be different reasons for this. And more space is also needed to control the darkness of the background.

Here is a link to a distorted 24-70 shot at small apertures:

And basically the same setup with the 70-200:

I really love you stuff and wish I had your resources, keep up the great work.

Great picture! Pose and light works fantastic together with the stunning model!

      Thanks, RP!

Big Al! Thank you for that juicy post. I see what you mean about the distortion, and I kinda feared that. Full-length images are still challenging. I'm pretty much up against the other wall when I shoot. At least I can cheat in PS if I absolutely have to.

Great job with the lighting! Im still learning in that area so sorry no help from me!

BTW, I love that studio space you have! If I had that space Id be soo rich right now!

I never liked the white backround on flickr. And I have to say I really like shorter focal length pictures recently. Kinda like the stuff Bil Zelman does. I just ordered an 35mm f2 for my system to get that 50mm feeling (damn cropped sensors I tell ya).
Melissa Rodwell had an post on shooting wide in fashion on her blog, but sadly I cannot link to it for some weird reason. It is on fashionphotographyblog dot com on the second page.
BTW: I don't think the picture is too dark, its moody ;)

      Cheers, Joris

      heehee, thanks Noel. :)

Hey, Joris! Your feedback is always appreciated, thank you. I feel you on the white background. It's really...bright and tends to burn the retinas at times.

Thanks for sending me Zelman's link. I definitely like his work, even the stuff that breaks all the rules. Let me go check out MelRod.

This image works for me 'as is'.........I think the lighting is fine, I love the shadows and any more light might burn out the skin tones. But then....I'm an amateur with no studio experience.....what do I know? Great shot!!

Yet another nice shot. I like it with the one exception that to my eye I'd like to see the color and texture of the shirt shes wearing brought out a little more. But thats just my untrained eye...

Thanks for always taking the time to give lighting info, its one of the reasons I always like checking out your work. :)

Thanks, dudes! Gary, sometimes it's OK to just like something and not have to explain why. I appreciate the kudos and have learned a few things for minor tweaks the next go-round.

And thanks for coming back, Pete! I'll try to be more diligent about taking photos of the actual set-up, but my mind is usually in 100 different places when I'm on set. Usually on 99 different kinds of food.

I, too, thought about bringing out the red, but then I remembered that fashion (these days) are all about desaturated colors. I had highlighted the clothing with the softbox above, and it looked too commercial for my taste. So I burned it.

Hey Amy, if you like Zelman, maybe you are interested in his interview on Strobist: strobist.blogspot.com/2009/02/hanging-loose-w ith-bil-zelm... , I love the described cloth technique and can't wait to try it myself.
I have to say, I especially like his rule breaking. He even makes noise look good, plus his stuff is very down to earth, something I want to become good in myself.
So, did you like Melissas stuff? She does have an Flickr account too: www.flickr.com/photos/fashionphotographyblog/
      Have a nice weekend.

      Cheers, Joris
