I think it takes it _as_ it flashes, which means I need to be 'in' frame before 'bumping' the bike.....Am I right? :)

I think the front light flash is the shutter. The back light is solid for about 10 seconds -- during those ten the shutter fires.

Your best best is to shake it a little then stand in front until the red light blips... and for a few seconds after.
