Takusan

There are a lot of people in Japan.

On New Year's Day I made the ill-advised trip to Meiji Shrine. In 2006 there were reportedly 3 million visitors to the shrine on this day. I don't know the numbers for 2007, when I was there, but it felt like that many.

    There were people traffic lights!

I saw the crowd and decided to queue for a short while to see how long I would have to wait. After 30 minutes we turned around and realised we were trapped. Left with no choice but to take part in one of the most important Japanese culture events, I went and paid my new year's visit to a shrine. The most visited shrine in new year's in all of Japan!

When we got into the shrine, we clapped, prayed, threw a coin and left (see picture in comment below). I'm glad I did it. But never again.
