I'm finished!

Thank you all so much for your support; the views, comments, messages emails...its really what kept this project going. I obviously did not finish even close to on time but knowing that I had people following my work and encouraging me to keep it up is really what pushed me to complete this. A huge thank you to everyone who helped me out with these portraits on set as well, and believing that my crazy ideas might work out.

When I started the weekly self-portrait project I had just graduated college and was moving across the country to a big city I had never set foot in. When I think about that time it feels so far away, which I think is good. I believe that means I have grown and changed over the past year. I have a long way to go to reach where I want to be but I am so proud of how far I've come. As a photographer and person. And maybe a year from now I'll read this little photo description and think again about how much has changed in such a short amount of time, and how wonderful that is.

Orson Welles

Bye for now :)

In the Wee Hours

In the Wee Hours

51/52

"There was once a prince, and he wanted a princess, but then she must be a real Princess. He travelled right around the world to find one, but there was always something wrong. There were plenty of princesses, but whether they were real princesses he had great difficulty in discovering; there was always something which was not quite right about them. So at last he had come home again, and he was very sad because he wanted a real princess so badly.

One evening there was a terrible storm; it thundered and lightninged and the rain poured down in torrents; indeed it was a fearful night.

In the middle of the storm somebody knocked at the town gate, and the old King himself sent to open it.

It was a princess who stood outside, but she was in a terrible state from the rain and the storm. The water streamed out of her hair and her clothes; it ran in at the top of her shoes and out at the heel, but she said that she was a real princess.

‘Well we shall soon see if that is true,’ thought the old Queen, but she said nothing. She went into the bedroom, took all the bed clothes off and laid a pea on the bedstead: then she took twenty mattresses and piled them on top of the pea, and then twenty feather beds on top of the mattresses. This was where the princess was to sleep that night. In the morning they asked her how she slept.

‘Oh terribly bad!’ said the princess. ‘I have hardly closed my eyes the whole night! Heaven knows what was in the bed. I seemed to be lying upon some hard thing, and my whole body is black and blue this morning. It is terrible!’

They saw at once that she must be a real princess when she had felt the pea through twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds. Nobody but a real princess could have such a delicate skin.

So the prince took her to be his wife, for now he was sure that he had found a real princess, and the pea was put into the Museum, where it may still be seen if no one has stolen it."

The Runaways

The Runaways

50/52

Inspired by the story of Henny Penny in Chicken Little. In many endings of the tale each character is eaten by a fox when they take refuge in his den to protect themselves from the end of the world. The fable is interpreted as a warning not to believe everything you are told.

All of the news about North Korea has me wondering what it would be like to live in a country ruled by fear and propaganda. Yesterday while watching this documentary I was shocked at the amount of pain and suffering its citizens have unnecessarily gone through. It makes me very grateful to know that, even with all of our problems, America isn't a bad place to be.

So grateful one of Chicago's fancy hotels let us sneak into the ballroom for this engagement session. We planned to shoot outside but it was pretty chilly so this worked out well. I can't wait to photograph this beautiful couple's wedding in August.

I feel like I'm getting better at coming up with ideas on the spot instead of planning them out to the very last detail, but the planned images still typically turn out better in the end. I would love to work more on shooting candidly- it's been way too long. I have a lot of respect for photographers that can be so versatile and pull amazing photos out of any lighting condition, location, or model.

Only three more photos until I'm finished and I'm heading out to go prop hunting today. I hope my concepts turn out the way they look in my head!

Happy Easter :)

Vernal Equinox

Vernal Equinox

Happy first day of spring! Although it sure doesn't feel like it yet up here in the windy city it's my favorite season.

Sequel to this photo

It seems that it's been awhile since I put more than a couple sentences or lyrics under an image. Lately I feel like I am running around trying to get so many things done at once I lose focus of what the important ones are. It's so easy to get caught up in everyday life and let this project and photography in general get buried under all the other lines on the to-do list, but photographing is what I love. Even if I am tired of my face I've got to make a better effort at making it my top priority! Hoping to finish out these next few photos strong and create work I am truly proud of.
