Instructions for How to Make a Tutu

Instructions for How to Make a Tutu by ambrosialove.
Folks have been asking - I figured it was time to take a close up photo, do some drawings, and put everything in one easy to find location. Props to Cherron for telling me how to make mine.

Hello, Loving the tutu you have made. My friends and I are going to make them for a neon/80's night out. I have a slightly odd question, roughly how many 'strips' of tulle did you use for your tutu? And do you have a full photo of it so I can see the poofyness? I am trying to figure out how much material we need to buy for each tutu.
Thank you

I'm looking for suggestions on what to wear with this. I'm going to an art retreat and making a red and black tutu, sort of gothic as feathz says.

I would like to wear a pair of cropped leggings/tights under it, but what to wear on top? Tank top?

It's for mid-October in Connecticut--I don't want to freeze...we will be indoors, though.

Any suggestions?

Quick Question~

I made one of these for my daughter. It was super cute until she wore it. The tulle started bunching up. I could not keep it straight. Almost like it needs spray starch. Unwearable. Looks like big clumps of tulle. Did not stay pretty. My tulle was cheap ($1.00 a yard). Is more expensive tulle stiffer?

What did I do wrong or what can I do differently?

ambrosialove  Pro User  says:

dahlquist2000 Errrm, I don't really know! My pink tutu is a lot 'scrunchier' than my blue one (see below) - I'm honestly not sure if it's because of the type of tulle or if it's because the strips on the pink one were cut so much narrower, resulting in more of the jagged little edges for the tulle to get caught on itself. I'm thinking it's the latter, but I'm really not a crafty person, believe it or not, so I don't know.

Hey Allie says:

Here's a trick I learned on YouTube. Take your tulle and fold it over (at this point it should be the length you want for your tutu). Then carefully roll the tulle into a tube, avoiding wrinkles. Cut off the raggedy ends. Then measure 3 or 4 inches, and cut the tube, measure another 3 or 4 inches, and cut again until you get to the end of the tube.

Actually, I took 2 pieces of folded over tulle and put them on top of each other, so each cut from the tube gave me 2 pieces of tulle. You could probably do 3 if your scissors are sharp enough. That saved a lot of time.

Then I took the ribbon and strung it between 2 chairs. That gave me 2 free hands to tie each piece of tulle and sped the process up.

I've read every how to on making a tutu today and I feel pretty stupid for not understanding by now, the shorter the width the poofier the tutu? measure how long you want the tutu times that by two? you buy the tulle by the length and width, right?

If I had measuring tape I could give you my measurments and just let you take me out of my misery, but can you help anyways?

ambrosialove  Pro User  says:

Well, I have these incredibly popular instructions posted and I feel pretty stupid for not always being able to answer folks questions. :P

The narrower the strips are cut, the more the kinda bunch up causing them to poof out - the wider they are, the more they kinda lay flat, but you'll still have some poof.

You are correct about figuring your length and then cutting the strips twice that length, because you're going to be folding them in half to tie your knots. You'll be a length of tulle in the store - you won't get to choose the width. I guess all fabric comes in the same width though - of course, I'm not entirely sure because I AM NOT a crafty person.

I've never figured out my length and then cut the tulle to length. For adult tutus, I just use the length that the tulle is (which is actually the fixed width, not the number of yards length). For the children's tutus I've made, I just cut the width in half. For the infant's, in quarters. But if you're super particular about the length, yes, just be sure to double it.

Hope this helps! It may be easier to just start cutting some strips and tying them on to see how they look.

marston31 , I've never worked with elastic, but I imagine you could either sew it or just tie it in a little knot - just make sure it's a knot that won't come undone, like a square knot.

I don't have a photo, but I wanted to chime in and say that I made one which I'm very happy with---but I appear to have blown right past everyone's maximum tulle usage numbers. I used nearly 19 yards. And I'm normal-sized, 29 or 30 inch waist... I just tied my knots REALLY little and tight. Ended up with the bouffiest tutu ever. Not that I'm complaining :D

We added a little flare too. After wrapping each piece onto the ribbon, we tied a knot at the end. It took away some of the poofy ness, but was still plenty poofy. On the ROCK & ROLL TuTu I used 30 yards of tulle, in three diffrent colors. Hot pink, light pink and black. In all it took me a little over an hour to make, and cost me around $35. Very easy, very fun - I can't wait to make more - thanks for the idea!

one way to speed up making your own tutu (and make it way less aggravating) is buy the 15- to 25-yard, 6"-wide spools of tulle, in as many colors as you want to use for your tutu. Then all you have to do is cut whatever length you want (about twice the length of the finished product), and you don't have to worry about cutting straight strips of tulle from yardage! I'm going to try getting a couple spools of tulle (in orange and black) to make a tutu for myself for Halloween...sure beats the heck out of dressing as a seamstress, like I did the last 2 years in a row (note: I just draped a tape measure around my neck and over the clothes I wore that day)!!!

Ferrare, the strips on the pink tutu are 1.75" wide and approximately 26" long, so once doubled over and knotted, the tutu is about 13" from waist to ends.
