Za-zen monk at the Soji-ji Temple

Soji-ji Temple is one of the biggest Za-zen meditation temples in Japan.

The temple needs approximately 20 training monks to run the entire monastery, which is self-sufficient apart for supporters’ donations. The length of the training is between 2-3 years and the monks’ routine is quite austere.

They wake up at 4am, eat and meditate, take care of the maintenance of the monastery and study. They cannot leave the temple until their training is completed, and receive the mantra by their masters.
