i knew when i began taking a daily self portait (with the goal for doing it for a whole year, every day) that i was going to see some changes in my physical appearance. when i started, my dog was dying; i was preparing to take an airplane for the first time in eighteen years; my husband and i were completing our application to adopt a baby.

i began by belonging to the 365 self-portrait group. but the single rule of taking a photo for every day of a single year did not seem to be the biggest motivation to many of the participants i saw in that pool, nor was that single rule enforced. for me, the challenge put upon the individual, more than that of the group, was what mattered, and so i decided to go it alone, without belonging to the group.

the idea of a year's worth of self portraits is not in and of itself all that original, but it is cumulative, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

in completing this project, i've enjoyed reminding myself - daily - that this is not just a year to "get through", but a significant portion of my life, and that every day counts. that has been good for me. and so, this is my year, beginning september 25, 2006 and ending september 24, 2007.
