Kawazu Loop Bridge

$Kawazu Loop Bridge by /\ltus.$

The Kawazu Loop Bridge was constructed in 1981 and may be one of the only double loop bridges in the world.

This bridge is on the way to Shimoda (clicking on "map" on the bottom right of this page will show you where its located).

@David - Would guess its the sharp drop off from the mountain to the river valley below that made it necessary. Then again, this being Japan and all (they sure do love their bridges here!) would guess they were just looking for an excuse to do it ;-)

In a parking garage in Kiel, a city in Nothern Germany there is a ramp that goes up 6 floors or so, in perfect circles. So basically you can keep your steering wheel in the same position, and keep driving the same speed, till you are at the top (and completely dizzy) :P Its the same idea, only that loop "bridge" is stuck to the side of a parking garage.

@alandot - Your right on all counts. Its to gain height to connect the river valley road with the mountain road and the transition is very narrow and steep, thus the loop.

Google earthed it and found this

The Kawazu Loop Bridge is located on Route 414 near the entrance of Nanadaru/Odaru Onsen. This double loop bridge was constructed to withstand earthquakes. It's 1.1 kilometers long and 45 meters high. The diameter is 80 meters. Since opening in 1981, it has become one of landmarks in Kawazu.
