Rhineland

Rhineland

A quick snap from a recent work trip to Düsseldorf...

Without blithering about tech too much, there's so much dynamic range in the D800 that it would've been very easy to single-shot HDR this and achieve a 'perfect' exposure, but I decided against - it was the impact of the silhouetted bridge against the sky that made me take the shot in the first place.

If anyone wants to see full-res give me a shout - the level of detail is startling!

Have a great weekend my flickr friends - and an excellent Jubilee Weekend in the UK.

Inspired by the style of James Ravilious - a wonderful English photographer. He spent the majority of his career in Devon, where he produced beautiful pastoral images of English rural culture.

King's Cross again...I think I'll head back here with something wider than 24mm...and when the sky isn't a flat grey!

Another full-res D800 image, a seriously pushed jpg conversion. I've only just got a RAW converter that's going to do a far better job than Photoshop, but not likely to put any shots up for the next week or so...off on hols :)

Tecchie details:

24mm at f/2.8 so the foreground is a little soft - I like the effect of drawing through the frame. This was exposed to keep the highlights from blowing out significantly and then I lifted the shadows in Photoshop - sure, there's some noise, but it's only from a jpg and there's no de-noising!

Have a great weekend!

Carbuncle

Carbuncle

Not actually the 'Carbuncle on the face of an elegant friend' that Prince Charles once referred to (he thought this resembled a nuclear power station), but it's certainly a building that divides opinion...

This is one of my personal favourite buildings on the South Bank, although it takes a certain appreciation to see the beauty in the brutalist architecture.

Built in the late 1970's and opened in 3 stages between 1976 and 1979. More info on a wonderful institution here.

Tecchie details: first real attempt at hand-held HDR with the D800, noticing the difference in frame rate from the D700! However, I think the results are pleasing...full resolution available for those interested! HDR in Photomatix, then saturation twiddling and contrast structuring in Photoshop. Quite liking this 'almost no saturation' look at the moment - I'll get over it ;)
