Angler fish

Looks like someone needs a toothbrush?!

This has to be the scariest fish out there! It has a long spine out of the front of it which glows mildly to attract its prey. The angler sits in the dark and literally fishes for food, then goes into snap it up. Unfortunately the tank was circular so it was impossible to get a shot without any reflections but this was the best one ( you can see the rainbow-type reflection on the right hand side ).

This beast of a fish has made it to the flicker explore page :o) Got ranked 10 at its highest. Thanks to everyone who commented!

I recently went back and got another photo of this in black and white.

After visiting another aquarium I got this shot of a shark in a similar pose!

Just got back from a holiday in Italy where "stewed angler fish" was on the menu for dinner one evening. Had no idea what it was, so came on the net to find out. Glad I didn't have it, as I wouldn't like him coming back to haunt me!

These deep sea creatures are so fascinating because they are just as extreme and monstrous as anything a conceptual artist could draw, but they're real! Never ceases to amaze me what crazy stuff nature is brewing up in its bowels. And if it isn't a frightening beast like this then it's some impossibly weird and beautiful gelatinous thing that lights up like a rock concert! Amazing stuff!
