Thingyan water festival

Just finished Thingyan, the water festival before the Buddhist New Year in Myanmar. Four days of people going nuts on the streets, dancing and drinking and splashing everyone in sight with buckets of ice-cold water. I absolutely loved it.

I'm back in Bangkok now applying for a new Taiwanese visa. I'm not sure whether to take an extra week or so to see some other things in Thailand or just head back to Taiwan.

Great shot. Did you take any special precautions to protect your camera from the water?

I held my camera out in my hand very clearly and just about everyone was kind enough to aim their water on me and not the camera. Some water did splash on my camera, but it's fairly durable. It's seen worse when I've taken in out in a typhoon in Taiwan.

Wow. Too bad maskofchina only noticed one thing. We have a similar water-splashing where I came from, and it varies from town to town. A friend who is teaching in Thailand mentioned this to me and I tried to finds photos here in flickr. Glad you shared this with the world.

Yeah, if there were a downside to this water festival, it was that Myanmar is still a fairly conservative country. Many of the more attractive women were bundled up and stuck together in groups for protection, though I doubt anything would have happened if one got seperated. And when they got onto the back of pick-ups to get hosed down like in the picture above, most of them were curled up into a ball, since the blasts from the fire hoses are pretty strong and hurt when they hit you in the face. I know since I was huddled up as well when I hopped onto the back of several pick-up truck myself.

On the other hand, I got many proposals for marriage and declarations of love from (ahem) fat chicks speeding by on the road. So I guess I have that going for me.
