Scrutiny

Scrutiny by aliasgrace.
Actually I didn't feel entirely safe as I met this glance through my zoom lense. I was about ten meters away. That's so amazing about the Galapagos islands. Birds and animals have no fear for humans whatsoever.

This is a Galapagos Hawk (Buteo galapagoensis), Endemic Vulnerable. Thanx to Gini from the "Field Guide: Birds of the world" group for helping me with the bird ID.

Shot september 2001 with a Nikon F601.

An intence stare! Like "What do you want?". But you have to clean the picture from dust ;) Nice job though.

Gini: I was told it is a falcon, but am a little in doubt after your comment. I have removed it from the pool and postet it to the Bird help thread.

He's a raptor of some kind. Do you have other photos that might show more of him? That would help with the ID. One thing we can do is lookup which raptors are found in the Galapagos at the time of year you took this photo. That would probably narrow down the choices. Thanks for looking into it

Guess what I found?! There are only 3 possibilities.

FALCONIFORMES: Pandionidae
Osprey Pandion haliaetus

FALCONIFORMES: Accipitridae
Galapagos Hawk Buteo galapagoensis, Endemic Vulnerable

FALCONIFORMES: Falconidae
Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus

Thanx for providing me with info on this one, Gini! I have a couple of other photos, but they are not scanned yet. I will post them in the thread as soon as it's done. One of them is of the bird in full size.

I just love this shot. I saw a hawk at the DC Zoo today. I can't imagine being on level ground with this guy staring me down.

Good shot, well composed, and birds always make difficult subjects to photograph (except on the Galapagos, it seems). However, the picture seems heavily compressed and lacks sharpness and crispness, which is a pity!

Very cool pose, and a nice shot; however, it appears a bit oversharpened. If you have Photoshop, a slight blur and a bit of dodging on the right eye would make this a great shot.

Great capture. You've framed this perfectly. I agree about the dodging of the eye.

Thanks for using CC. I'm going to use this image (credited to you, of course) in a presentation to first year biology students to generate discussion on endemic species. :)
