These are SO cool. What type of dye did you use? They look absolutely biological. I have (quite) a few photos of dyes diffusing in a salt gradient, but they don't have the variety of structures these dyes do.

IIRC its two rhodamines (red + yellow), a coumarin deriv. (blue), and good old green fluorescein. the choice of solvent definitely affects the dissolution and diffusion effect. back then I worked in a chem lab so there were lots of opportunities to experiment.
