The Small Hand that Kills (41th/52)

    Newer Older

I had the good idea of including the (small) hand of my little girl in this week's shot.

I say good idea but it wasn't really. It turned out much harder than I thought to get to to cooperate (or at least, to cooperate when the time was right). I didn't want her to get the habit to slap people in the face so I just asked her to put her hand on my face (I can manage to make it look like she's slapping me right?).

Anyway, after I failed at having all three elements in the same shot (me looking like I'm getting hit, her small hand slapping me and the nutrios cereals being spat out), I decided to try and combine three shots to make one. I can't say I enjoyed the experience that much. I really prefer to have everything in one shot straight in camera.

By the way, my little girl is an angel and she's not violent at all. And she certainly doesn't have a small hand that kills ;)

      FLAVIE!!!

i have the same problem when i try to photoshop elements together from separate photos.. i spend a lot of time thinking about logistics before i actually take the shot, just to make sure i can fit everything in the way i want. things like depth of field, focus, lighting, shadows, etc.

the shot i had in the toilet a few weeks ago wasn't meant to turn out the way it did. i was meant to have arms that were pushing myself out of it, but i couldn't get my hands in the right place in the photo to put into the composite. anyways, i fudged it. :)

i think the idea of this is REALLY good, but her hand doesn't really seem to be there.. it seems to be missing a few shadows in places which would create a little more realism. but i obviously understand the difficulties of getting a 3 year old to cooperate! :)

Too cute. I like it. Your expression (and wide pupils!) and the cereal are great. Kinda agree with Lucky about the shadow of her hand missing, but the biggest thing that stuck out to me is that the slap would have been with the other hand in that direction. Not that I am a slapping expert. ;)

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I updated the shot and replaced the hand with a better one. I think the shadow is a bit better now.

My girlfriend laughed at the way you shouted "FLAVIE". She won't be commenting though even if she really does have a flickr account. Maybe someday... By the way, she's not 3 years old, she's 19 months old now ;)

I think the shadow is better with the updated shot...wished I'd done that when I initially posted it but better late than never, right? About the slap, I know it could have been more natural in the other direction...but from first hand experience with this, when she's on that side, it happens like showed here. That is, If she slaps me, it's with her right hand and going in that direction ;) But I agree that a grown up would most likely not do it like that...

Thanks for the kind words :)

Hi Alex. I thought I'd let you know that I used your photo on my website. We had a question about the Chinese word for slap and your delightful photo gave it an impactful and humorous touch. Thanks so much for sharing this!
