Looking back to Stank

Looking back to Stank

A view back over the stiles to Stank while walking through to Leece.

The patchwork of the English countryside is unfolding for another summer with fields cut and chopped for silage, others mown ready for tedding and some still being grazed or drilled with cereals.

The interestingly named hamlet of Stank can be seen in the valley. The hamlet was for a brief period one of the centres of iron mining in Furness.

Agriculture to Industry

Agriculture to Industry

Looking down from Yarlside over Barrow-in-Furness.

The picture almost leads you through the history of Barrow, starting from the rural gate and rough hewn stone gate post, the middle distance includes a reservoir left as a reminder of the Yarlside mines that contributed to Barrows growth and prosperity. The view of Barrow itself includes the Town Hall, dockside cranes and the shipyards in the far distance dominated over by Devonshire Dock Hall.

Rural and industrial together

Rural and industrial together

Barrow-in-Furness and the ship yard can be glimpsed in the distance from the hills between Stank and Leece. In the middle distance a tractor tends the grass ready to be collected for silage as the first cut of the season gets under way.
